There is a series of famous paintings that captured the journey of Blacks from the South to the North in the early 20th Century. It would be a gross exaggeration to compare the influx of Black lesbians into the Palm Springs area with thousands of Blacks leaving the Jim Crow South but why not. Over the past decade Black women have moved to Palm Springs in sufficient numbers to give the place an afro-centric edge. Many came to town for the Dinah Shore Weekend or The Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival, fell in love with the desert and decided to make it home.

As the social and political climate becomes more gay-friendly more Latina lesbians are appearing on the scene. This has not so much do to with their moving to town, which has a large Hispanic population, as it does with their feeling more comfortable in coming out and being an open lesbian. Together these two groups give Palm Springs a new look in the gay community where same has been the game.

Mexican-Americans make up about 50% of the population is the Coachella Valley. As the social and political climate becomes more gay-friendly more Latina lesbians are appearing on the scene.  This has not so much do to with their moving to town, although the numbers are up, as it does with them feeling more comfortable coming out and being an open lesbian.
