Honoree Jewel Thais-Williams with Barbara Carpenter, President of L-FundThe L- Fund organization raises money for lesbians in crisis situations who need help with everything from paying the rent to finding affordable child care. At their annual fundraiser in February, where Jewel Thais-Williams, former owner of the LA gay bar Catch On was honored, more than 300 people, mostly women, showed up and showed out. After dinner at the Agua Caliente Hotel, Barbara Carpenter, the organizations president, stood up and asked the group to pledge their financial support and within 15 minutes more than $50,000 was raised.

The two largest pledges were two donations of $20,000 and $10,000; the first from Edith Gross of La Quinta and the second from Denise Hughes and Ann Wilson from Palm Springs.

It seems the assumption that lesbians do not have money and don’t support charitable causes was proven wrong, at least on this night, when the light shone bright on women donors to this worthy cause. Kudos to the L-Fund and to Carpenter who announced a new program to provide funds for lesbians who want to go to college that will be started by the donation from Hughes and Wilson.
