Barbara Carpenter moved to Palm Springs almost eight years ago. Barbara was born in The Bronx, New York. She is the mother of three, grandmother of three, and is married to Renae D. Carpenter – a former prosecutor and retired defense attorney. She has been a Real Estate professional for 14 years working diligently to ensure that all of her clients are represented at the highest level of competency and service. Barbara earned a BA Degree in Organizational Studies with a concentration in Black Studies from Pitzer College of “The Claremont Colleges”.
She and 5 other Lesbians founded the grassroots organization The L-Fund to provide financial grants to Lesbians in temporary financial crises. Barbara is the Executive Director of the L-Fund and with her leadership, The L-Fund has developed from a small grassroots organization to a federally recognized 501(C(3) that has provided scores of Lesbians with thousands of dollars in financial grants. The L-Fund recently introduced LEAP, The L-fund Education Assistance Program for lesbians needing financial assistance for their educational goals, whether for colleges and universities, professional schools, or vocational educational programs.
Along with the other founding members of the L-Fund, Barbara was honored with the Palm Springs Pride Stonewall Advocate of the Year Award 2016 for their outstanding work in the community. She was also awarded the 2016 My Sister’s Keeper Award from SAGE Riverside for her commitment to empowering the lives of lesbians through service. The Human Rights Commission recognized her with 2017 Equality Award. Barbara served as Co-Chair for the National Center For Lesbian Rights 2017 Garden Party, served on the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast Committee, Co-Chaired the 2018 Opera Arts along with Arlene Rosenthal – Executive Director of Well in the Desert – and is one of the 2018 Vice Chair’s for Pride’s Outstanding Voices Award Celebration. This year Barbara is the recipient of the Desert Business Association 2018 Community Leader Award.
