Phyllis Porter – known to most of us as Chef Phyllis – spent most of her life working in those kinds of jobs that pay well but seldom satisfy the soul. When her partner of 21 years died in 2009 everything crumbled around her. “I was in a fog. I asked myself, where do I go from here.” She moved to Moreno Valley and after months of being a recluse, decided to try on-line dating and met her current wife Sharon Catlett, a Navy veteran living in Las Vegas. That’s when she decided to get a new lease on life.
She said she had always loved to cook and worked alongside her mother – who ran a small catering company in Santa Monica, where Phyllis grew up. She was looking for something new to do and with the encouragement of her new wife decided on Culinary School. After two years of training she transformed herself from a middle manager in a pharmaceutical company to one of the most popular chefs in the Palm Springs women’s community.
Her first big job was a lesbian wedding with 150 guests. From there she became the regular caterer for Lucy and Gail events including their annual Jazz Master Award party. Her next big job is over the Pride Weekend where she will cater the Dyke March picnic. Outdoor BBQ’s are her specialty but she also does unusual sweets. At last year’s Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival, all the hotel guests received cookies in the shape of saxophones and musical notes. If you are looking to celebrate – Chef Phyllis can turn an ordinary party into a culinary delight!
